Barbie Inspired Beach Shoot

A Barbie inspired beach shoot is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time during one our Senior Destination shoots. This year everything came together and we were actually able to get it done….

When we set out to do the shoot I wanted a different location from the beach that was directly across the street. So we set off for Station 18 1/2 on Sullivans Island as I’ve shot there several times before on previous Senior Destinations and really liked that part of the beach front…

When we got to Station18 1/2 surprisingly there was no parking available so we proceeded to an alternative location that isn’t as well know or visited as often, Station 16.

Parking wasn’t a big issue but the walk to the beach front turned out to be longer than we thought. Course we went through the obligatory mosquito herds and the girls kept commenting about all the paths that had coyote warning signs… I think that gave them a little more pep in their step. The walk seemed long (it was) because of all the trees that covered the path (felt like a tunnel) and you couldn’t see the ocean or hear it until you were right on it so there was no way to gauge how far you’d gone or how much more there was to go until you came up on the opening to the beach.

When we got there the sun was getting really strong as it was almost directly overhead. I generally don’t like shooting in open sun this time of day at the beach but we didn’t have any options because of the schedule we needed to keep. Needless to say, because the sun was directly overhead this was the only time I got any sunburn which was on top of my feet! It had been years since I’d had a sunburn, I didn’t miss it.

We carried a lot of things with us as you’ll see in the images, and we ended up with a surprise prop that turned out to be really great!

Happy Birthday America! #247

I try to do an Americana shoot every year but it doesn’t always work out for various reasons. All this week I’ve been sharing on Instagram some of the Americana images we took while on our recent Destination trip to Charleston/Isle of Palms South Carolina! Aside from today there are three more sets of images still to be shared this week.

Senior Destination trips are something we do each year with members from my Senior Model Team. This year we returned to the Isle of Palms in South Carolina the first time in three years (happy to be back).

After settling in the first shoot we did on our arrival in Isle Of Palms was our Americana shoot! The weather was perfect and the beach was literally out the front door… and of course the girls did fantastic! When you do a group shoot the trick is to try and make sure no one’s images look like someone else’s… I think we managed to do that!

Late last week I received an email from SeniorSznMagazine asking if I would submit images for their upcoming special edition “Patriotic Special Issue 2023”. Happy to announce that they featured six of my images of Aubrey, Chloe, Trinity, Madison and Annabel along with a group image. Congratulations ladies!!!

National Donut Day

It’s that time of year again…..

I think just about everyone loves a good donut (a few don’t, we won’t talk about them). For those that do love donuts they all seem to have a favorite that they like just a little bit more than the others… For me I like the cake type donuts best with powdered sugar. Other’s need that glaze or some yummy icing. Needless to say though that for this shoot MacKinley and Trinity tried them all!

Thirteen is your Lucky Number!

It’s always exciting news when you find out a magazine has notified you that one of your images is being considered as a cover image for the next edition. It’s even more exciting when you find out there are only seven images (out of thousands) being considered and two of them are yours!!!

As it would turn out we didn’t get the cover, but I’m still happy and delighted not only for myself but also for Aubrey and MacKinley, that their images were in contention for the cover of the Spring edition of Teen Years Magazine!

Fast forward to this past Friday when I received my digital copy only to discover to my surprise that thirteen of my images are in the Spring edition! Thank you so much Teen Years Magazine for the features of my Class of 2024 Senior Model Team!

A big “shout out” to these amazing girls! Congratulations goes to Aubrey pages 27 & 54, MacKinley page 37, Riley pages 38 & 106, Chloe page 63, Trinity page 66, Madison pages 69 & 70 (her own spread), Talley page 75, Deanna page 93, Annabel page 99 and Elana page 113! Way to go girls!!!

National Ice Cream Day!!!

Image

National Ice Cream Day.

Yep, its a real thing! In fact it happens every third Sunday in July and has been since it was enacted by President Reagan in 1984!. He wanted to commemorate the frozen treat that over 90 percent of the American population enjoys. Did you know the average American eats about 23 gallons of ice cream a year ?

To celebrate Nation Ice Cream Day Lauren (who’s one of my Senior Models for Class of 2021) and I did this little shoot a few weeks ago to help mark the occasion…..

Coffee Shop

What’s there to do on a boring rainy day? How about grabbing a friend, a book and then spend the afternoon at a coffee shop? Abby and Morgan seemed to make the best of that day even though there were plenty of eyes watching us shoot. The coffee shop was actually packed which made it quite challenging to shoot. It was kinda funny watching the by-standers attempt their poses…. I think secretly they wished their pictures were being taken….

These images were all shot with the available natural light.

National Donut Day

June 7th – National Donut Day

National Donut Day is a real thing! Arguably it’s one of the most worthwhile food holidays! and it actually has a reason for existing!

National Donut Day was created in 1938 to honor the “Donut Lassies” from World War I! The Donut Lassies were women who volunteered with the Salvation Army to help boost soldier morale. One of the ways they did this was by creating donuts from scratch with the meager supplies they had. The Lassies wanted to give the soldiers something that was homemade that wasn’t candy or cigarettes.

These women volunteered to join the front lines of the American Expeditionary Force in France. The obvious supplies they issued to them were; gas masks, helmets and .45 caliber revolvers.

In September of 1917 just a few miles from the front lines they were serving the traditional treats like fudge and hot chocolate when they came up with an idea to make home made donuts. Using shell casings for rolling pins and helmets to fry in they were well on their way to making donuts something that reminded the soldiers of home.

Thank you “Donut Lassies”!!!

Challenge Shoot – Whiteout!

I love doing “Challenge Shoots”! It had been awhile since the last time I had shot a Challenge Shoot. Last year was so busy and lots of things happening that I just couldn’t get very many done. I’m vowing this year I will return to taking on the challenges….

The first challenge of the year is a Whiteout theme…. traditionally when it comes to Whiteout Themes in the Winter you think of doing something related to winter, snow or ice…. But I started thinking what else is white that we see all the time? It’s simple, clouds… clouds are white! But who or what lives in the clouds?

The Story

What could be more whimsical than a cloud? As children we would gaze and wonder at these puffs of air laced with water, and dream as they took on mysterious shapes.

According to ancient Greek mythology clouds were not actually ‘clouds’ at all, but rather a group of young nymphs called Nephelai – the daughters of two Titans.

These cloud spirits – depicted as both young and beautiful – spent their days collecting water from the rivers, and then floated up to the heavens. When their pitchers were full they poured water down from the sky, nourishing the earth and feeding the streams of their brothers.

Perhaps this is the dream William Shakespeare referred to when he wrote: “That, if then I had waked after a long sleep, will make me sleep again; and then, in dreaming, the clouds me thought would open and show riches ready to drop upon me; that, when I waked I cried to dream again.”

Photo shoots don’t happen in a vacuum, I can’t emphasize enough how dependent I was on the team that made this all happen!

Rushing Into The New Year!

Finishing the year on a high note and starting the New Year off & running!

The last two months of 2018 finished on a high note for me and my Senior Photography. I generally don’t enter competitions but on a whim I decided to enter Senior Style Guide’s Hot 100. At the end of August I submitted a few images having few expectations with less than fifteen minutes to spare at the deadline. Once I discovered that globally there were 8152 photographers submitting I lowered my expectations a little more.

On Wednesday November 21st, the day before Thanksgiving I received two notifications. The first notification was from The Twelfth Year, they were featuring one of my images on their site! That was completely out of the blue! About 30 minutes later I received notification that I was selected as one of the Top 100 Senior Photographers Globally! Senior Style Guides “Hot 100”!

I was pretty much at a loss for words in describing how that made me feel, but I was definitely Thankful and it came at a perfect time of reflection and in giving Thanks!

Since then I’ve been fortunate enough to have been featured four more times with the last one being today, New Years Day!

The last shoot of 2018 I did with any of my Senior Model Team members was with Chaney. On December 10th We had a blast shooting several different looks for the Christmas and New Years Holiday’s. From that session we’ve been featured on Senior Muse and Seniors Best! Images from that session are below. If you want to see the other images that have been featured you’ll need to go to my Instagram Page…. @jimtincherphoto
