Truly Brave…..

Back in September 2014 I created my first blog post, this was before I created my WordPress site. I wasn’t really happy with how the blog appeared so I moved my blog here and hid that original post. This morning I decided to share that original blog post here. It may be a little long, but I hope you take the time on this snowy day and enjoy!

September 25, 2014

I’ve been wanting to begin my photography blog for quite some time now but I was struggling with writing the first one. What should be the first topic and what angle should I approach it from? This morning it became quite clear what this first blog should be, and it’s not about photography.

I caught the video below being aired this morning on NBC’s Today Show before I left for work. It appears to be an effort made by one of the hosts Hoda Kotb (I don’t watch morning news shows so I’m not sure who she is). There are four things I liked about this video. The first reason stands alone by it’s self and I don’t want to take away from it because without it I would not be able to discuss the following parts which are my thoughts about the music and the performers. It goes without saying that the children in the video are simply amazing!

1. The reason for making it the video in the first place is to bring awareness to childhood cancers. As a parent one of my most secret fears is the health of our children before, during and after they are born. We wonder as they grow who and what they will become as they progress through life. But unfortunately there are too many children who’s lives are diverted from that natural wonder and are directed into struggles for life its self.

About the music.

2. Blended songs seldom work well, but this one did and I happen to like both of the songs. They have blended Cyndi’s True Colors (I remember seeing that aired in the 80’s on a Patti Labelle Christmas Special) and Sara’s Brave. A song that I think will become an iconic song on it’s own.

3. I saw Cyndi Lauper in concert at the Virgina Beach Ampitheater when we lived in Chesapeake, VA during the 1990’s. She was the warmup artist for Tina Turner (what a show!). Cyndi was pregnant at the time and she performed while sitting on a stool. Cyndi was amazing. Yes there were thousands of people there but in truth, the way she performed and spoke, it was as if it was just me and her sitting in a room together…. and she played for me!

4. Sara Bareilles, simply put I like her stuff. Truly one of the few gifted and talented singer/songwriter’s of today. There just aren’t very many of these type of artist these days. It’s sad, as songwriters tell stories, and there just isn’t enough story telling anymore.

I think it is wonderful that these two amazing artist have teamed up with Hoda to bring awareness and to help raise money for not only these children, but for those who are yet to come. It is hoped that with research this can become something in the past.

If you can I urge you to help and to donate to any of the many centers that offer treatment and research for childhood cancers. There’s probably one near where you live. Take a moment to find one.

On another note, as you’ll see in the video, the kids are happy. That’s because Happiness is a choice no matter what we may face!

You can help by going here if you want to give directly to the effort Hoda has started.;

Beauty is more than skin deep……

Sometime back in the fall maybe Oct or Nov I met this Gracie, Gracie K… who is best friends with another Gracie, Gracie S. I don’t remember the exact date in Oct of 2014 I received a call from Gracie S, who’s image you’ve seen by now. Gracie S. was down in the dumps because of a tragedy that had occurred and she wanted to do a shoot, something special for Gracie K. Well, as you know by now I love working with Gracie S so it didn’t take much of an excuse for me to want to hear more. When she told me that the week earlier Gracie K’s mom has passed suddenly, I knew whatever we did, it needed to be something special and I was fully on board.

Portrait of Gracie K taken during the first of two sessions. This was her fist time in front of the camera in a studio session such as this. Seeing the image you see one type of beauty. But seeing and knowing Gracie K you’ll know that beauty is greater than skin deep.

So we set up a board on Pinterest and started loading up the ideas for the shoot. I have to admit though, it was Gracie that was coming up with the ideas and that she was really the one filling up our board. Frankly I loved her idea(s), they were fun, this was going to be an amazing shoot! We actually did this shoot over two sessions several weeks apart.

You don’t get to see those images just yet. Well, except for the portrait of Gracie K that is. The other images from the shoot will be available soon though. I’m hoping some of them will be published in the near future.

I’m so glad I had the opportunity to not only meet Gracie K but I got to know her. I feel just a little richer having done so.

If asked to give a description, all I can say is that Gracie K is an amazing person and that she demonstrates clearly that beauty can be greater than skin deep.

Those Nice Little Surprises

Aren’t little surprises great? Several weeks ago I (along with five other colleagues) was invited to have one of my photo’s as part of a permanent display for the Lexington Fashion Collaborative at LexArts in downtown Lexington. Wow…. talk about making my day!

It didn’t take but about a second for me to know which image I wanted for the display. It was one that I had shot with Gracie back in December. I did go through some of my other recent images that I really liked but I kept returning to this one.

Last night (January 23rd) at the first community meeting for the Lexington Fashion Collaborative for 2015 was the reveal of all the images going on display.

I’m thankful to be a part of this group, thankful for my friends and colleagues in this group, and thankful to Gracie for being such a wonderful model. I absolutely love working with Gracie.

If you like my work or want to see more images follow me on IG & Twitter @jimtincherphoto, visit my website http://www.jimtincher.com or subscribe to this blog as I promise there will be more exciting (to me) things to share with you and to tell you about this year!

Cheers!

Gracie Sapp – Miss Teen Kentucky USA 2013. From a photo shoot in December 2014. Gracie is my goto model, she’s amazing and I care so much about this girl. You can see more images of Gracie on my website http://www.jimtincher.com

I love my job as a photographer, I get to meet and work with so many different talented people. Each one has that something special which makes them unique. Sometimes along the way you run across a person that stands out just a little bit more than the others. There’s a connection that happens between you that’s really special, and you find that working on and developing projects is smooth sailing, and when it comes time to get the shot, it’s effortless.

I’ve been asked so many times, “what’s your favorite image”? Who do you like to work with the most? Who is your goto model? I generally don’t like those types of questions as I’ve enjoyed working with everyone that I’ve worked with. But to pin it down, then that answer is simple. If you’ve seen my Twitter, Instagram (both @jimtincherphoto) or my photography page you’ll notice that they are all covered with this girls face. I’m not sure how many models I’ve worked with in the past, they’ve all been wonderful. But when asked who my favorite person to work with is, you already know the answer. Gracie.

This was taken from a recent photo shoot. This image isn’t scheduled to be published but several images from that shoot are.

I Can’t Contain Myself…..

Caroline Ford from a photo shoot we did in October 2014. Love working with this gal. There are more images of Caroline at http://www.jimtincher.com

I can’t contain myself….
Well actually I can as I’m really a very low key person but I can’t begin to describe how excited I feel for this girl right here. Yes she’s been the subject of two other blog posts but this one is different.

This is a testament to sticking to your guns, working through and past prior setbacks. To continue and push forward with renewed vigor and determination. Always believing in yourself and in what you can accomplish regardless of prior outcomes.

You see, so many times in the past Caroline has been so close to winning the title of Miss Teen Kentucky USA or Miss Outstanding Teen Kentucky. Always finishing in the top every time but never quite reaching the pinnacle, even if it should have been her.

Last night, January 11, 2015 at the Ursuline Arts Center all that changed. Caroline is now Miss Kentucky Teen USA 2015! I can’t help but be proud of her. This morning as I look through my feeds, all I can see is the overwhelming love for her being poured out as she has finally reached the top!

Congratulations Caroline, it’s not that you deserve this, you’ve earned this!

Out with the old and in with the new! Or Happy New Year! Or….

Out with the old and in with the new!

….but before I say that, I want to take a moment and thank everyone that has liked my page, made comments or helped and worked with me this past year. Today we are reaching the last of the year, in what was a year of many firsts.

There have been so many people I’ve worked with this year. The number of those that have been a part of what I’ve done is not only numerous but I’d be afraid of posting names in fear of omitting someone.

This year I’ve shot

  • numerous editorials
  • model portfolio’s
  • seniors
  • stuff for fun
  • beauty queens
  • special projects
  • pageants
  • runway
  • and all sorts of other things in a never ending list.

None of which could have been done without the numerous models, stylist, designers, hair and makeup artist all putting their touch on what I’ve worked hard to do. I want to thank each and everyone that has been apart of this, for their camaraderie, creative genius and friendship.

I want to thank each of YOU for having made 2014 a very special year.

And welcome 2015!

Out with the old and in with the NEW!

CHEERS!

First Shoot Revisited

Back in October I made my first blog post and it revolved around a remarkable young lady that I’ve grown to know and care about. Since that post Caroline and I have done the second shoot which should be published within the next two weeks. I’m really excited about those images and I can hardly wait to share those.

Just one of many great images of Caroline from our first shoot. This and more images can be seen at http://www.jimtincher.com

In the meantime though I have finished editing the images from our first shoot and to me they are what I would define as stunning.

I love when the model and I connect as it never fails that great images are the result. I can easily say that with both shoots that Caroline and I have done.

I Love Fashion Shows

There’s just something about being at a fashion show and shooting the runway that I just love. Is it the fashion? Is it the models? Is it the art? How about the glamour? What about the excitement and anticipation that is the event itself? Fashion shows could be described “fashion as art”. That’s really what some fashions are at these shows, wearable art! Needless to say I have been amazed at some of the creations I see at these events by designers in our local area.

Maddie Greene on the runway at the Kentucky Crusade for Deaf Children (KCDC) Fashion Show Inaugural Event on October 18, 2014 at the EKU Center for the Arts. A complete gallery of this fashion show is available at http://www.jimtincher.com

Around here though fashion shows are a little more than a show. Most of the events I’ve been to are also charity events. These shows/events not only raise money for local charities they also help bring awareness to issues in our own back yard! So often we are removed from the needs of others, but these local fashion shows help to bring it home, to open our eyes to struggles we may read about but that we never see or do anything about.

Case in point. Recently I had the opportunity to shoot the runway for an event called “Kentucky Crusade for Deaf Children”. This was the inaugural event of what I hope to be a long running fashion show, and that I am anxious be a part of again.

The Kentucky Crusade for Deaf Children (KCDC) is a non-profit organization founded by Maddie Greene (MISS Madison County 2014) and Sal Olivet. The KCDC provides resources, programs, support and information to families with deaf and hard of hearing children.

I’ve come to know Maddie as a warm and caring person that is directly affected by this issue. At age fourteen she was diagnosed with 45% hearing loss due to nerve damage. But that did not stop her, she now has hearing aides and at age sixteen is a full time student (freshman) at EKU! I find her to be a remarkable young woman and someone that I am proud to call a friend.

First Shoots! You just never know how they’ll go…..

Image

When you meet a model for the first time you never know how the shoot is going to go. Recently I had a shoot with Caroline. Several months ago we became friends on Facebook. I had always liked her look and knew at some point I wanted to work with her. We chatted several times over the course of several weeks and finally the opportunity arose for us to get together.

Just one image from our recent shoot. Nearly a random photo, all her images are this good!

Just one image from our recent shoot. Nearly a random photo, all her images are this good! You can see this and other images at http://www.jimtincher.com

As we were planning our first shoot I had already made up my mind to shoot with her a second time on a project I had been wanting to do for a long time. I talked with my designer and we discussed things in general and, lets just say that there is a future blog in the works.

Finally the day came for our shoot and all I can say is WOW! Caroline is such a wonderful person! Before we had actually met I already knew that at 17 she had accomplished quite a few things such as: starting her own charity at age 12, a Miss Kentucky Teen contestant, graduating HS early and many other accomplishments.

Needless to say, everything I had thought she was, she was, and more…. she exceeded all my expectations of who she was and my expectations were already lofty. Meeting and working with young people such as Caroline is always a pleasure. Young women such as her should give us all hope that there are some very grounded soon to be adults that are future leaders.

Back to the photo shoot. As we were shooting we would review after each session and I didn’t say too much at the time but I could tell we were getting some great images, I may have let that on just a little bit a time or two. As we shot, I kept talking with Caroline about expressions and how I wanted her to look into the camera, and as we progressed the images kept getting better and better and the shoot really began to flow. I felt that I could have shot several more hours but it was getting late in the day and I knew she had a long drive ahead of her. So we hugged and said our goodbyes.

Last night, I finally had a chance to sit down and really go through these images after having been delayed in doing so by other projects and interruptions. All I can say is that I have a difficult task ahead of me. I’m not sure how long it will take for me to cull these images to just a few because I love them all!

I will be posting more images of this shoot soon, you can view them on my website, http://www.jimtincher.com

Caroline was recently named a WBKO-TV “Hometown Hero” in Bowling Green, KY for her event “Will Sing for Food” that serves the American Red Cross. See her interview here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1SYQQD-6WE
